Homework
I believe children this age should be enjoying other activities besides academics- both structured, extra-curricular ones such as sports or drama and unstructured time spent playing outdoors, drawing or letting their creativity loose. I also believe families need positive, relaxed time together. Therefore, while I believe at this age homework builds valuable skills such as time management, my goal is not to let homework make life unduly stressful for parents or children. In line with National Education Association recommendations (10 minutes per grade level), sixth graders can expect to spend an average of 1 hour per night on homework. Please contact me if your child is struggling with homework. Homework this year include:
Almost every night (Mon-Thurs): Math Skill Work (usually a short worksheet or 5-6 problems from the book to practice what has already been taught in class. NOTE: the textbook has sample problems for reteaching that your child should refer to if he/she is stuck. Also, odd-numbered problems have answers in the back of the book. The book is also accessible online from a link on our sixth grade web page.)
Occasional: Spanish, Writing, Reading, Time For Kids Magazine assignments, Writing Mechanics, Social Studies, & Science, Study for Tests
Long Term: Independent Book Projects (at least one per trimester) Sixth Graders are expected to be reading regularly at home and this is considered part of their nightly homework. Book Project assignments are designed in part to help make sure this happens. Below is a link to Trimester 2's Book Project (Testing, 1,2,3..), supporting resources, a copy of the first quarter worksheet (other worksheets are the same, just titled for second, third and fourth quarter) and a sample final project. All of these items except the sample final project the students should have in hard copy in their homework folders.

Students are also expected to know their math facts by sixth grade. If I find your child still needs work in this area, we will be in touch to set up some extra practice.
Homework is rarely assigned on Friday, though this does occasionally happen! Of course, independent reading should continue to happen over the weekend!
